How Long Does It Take to Build a Boat Dock in Austin?

"How long is this going to take?" is the second question every lakefront owner asks after price. The honest answer for the Austin area is 3 to 7 months from first phone call to finished dock, with most projects landing around four to five months.
Here is what actually happens in that window, and where the time goes.
Phase 1 — Consultation & Design (1 to 3 weeks)
We walk your shoreline, take measurements, look at water depth, sun exposure, neighboring docks, and how you actually plan to use the space. From there we produce a design concept, material selections, and a written proposal.
Time saver: Have photos of your shoreline and any existing dock ready before the first visit.
Phase 2 — Permitting (4 to 12 weeks)
This is the single most variable part of the timeline. On Lake Travis and the Highland Lakes, you need an LCRA dock permit. Depending on the season and complexity, LCRA review runs anywhere from 30 days to 90+ days.
Factors that slow permitting:
- Shoreline modifications (retaining walls, cuts)
- HOA review on top of LCRA
- Setback variances
- Submitting in peak season (March–June)
Time saver: Engage a builder early. We can often run design and permitting in parallel rather than sequentially.
Phase 3 — Fabrication (3 to 8 weeks)
While permits are processing, we start ordering long-lead items: lifts, structural steel, custom roof components, premium decking. Hydraulic lifts and Butler multi-lift systems can carry 6–10 week lead times depending on the manufacturer's queue.
Phase 4 — Installation (2 to 6 weeks on site)
A standard single-slip dock typically installs in 2–3 weeks. A multi-slip or party-deck build can run 4–6 weeks of on-water work, weather permitting.
A few things that can stretch this:
- Lake levels too low to barge in materials
- Severe weather windows (storms, lightning)
- Coordinating with electrical and plumbing subs
Phase 5 — Final Inspection & Walkthrough (1 week)
LCRA final inspection, our internal punch list, and a walkthrough with you before we hand over keys.
Realistic Total Timelines by Project Type
- Simple dock repair or lift swap: 2–4 weeks
- Standard new single-slip dock: 3–5 months
- Premium multi-slip with sundeck: 5–7 months
- Full rebuild including shoreline work: 6–9 months
When to Start Planning
If you want to be on the water by Memorial Day, start the conversation in November or December. If you want to be ready by July 4th, start by January or February.
Projects we start in spring usually finish in late summer or early fall — still beautiful Texas lake weather, just not the prime opening of boating season.
